We are looking for alternate ways to view our Product Backlog. Since our backlog gets large [large installed base means lots of requests, long planning horizon etc.], we have a lot of items there. The length of the list gets increased again when the backlog includes the sprint by sprint breakdown of larger efforts that are modeled in Version1 as Epics.

To address our needs, we would like the option to structure the Product Backlog view using Epics, or Feature Groups or Goals, or just as one long list, like we have now.
If we choose to structure the list by Epic, we would have every Feature contained in an Epic shown under that Epic [perhaps indented], and could show or hide Epic breakdown detail using ‘plus boxes’. A control that allows us to show or hide all Epic breakdowns at once would be useful. Features that are not part of an Epic would be included in the list as they are in the current Product Backlog view.

To be clear, this is not really a filter, but the same information presented using Epic to add structure to the list. In the same way, using Feature Group or Goal to structure the report might also be useful.

  • I'm voting for this... it might need some more analysis and feedback, but I think the thread is a good one!

  • I like this idea for large projects. However, we don't always put feature groups in epics. We'd want to sort by feature group first on some projects, by epic first on others and on some, epics are like features, but cover non-functional items, such hardware set up, training, administrative things like prepping for a steering committee meeting. So we'd be looking at feature separately from epics.

  • In addition to having the ability to view the data 'grouped' differently (as was asked for), the different views really need to be able to be saved and switched between.

  • I'd like to be able to "filter" the Epics grid view to show only a specified epic and all of its sub-epics and stories, recursively. The only way I can currently get a view of a single root epic and all of its structure is in the Breakdown Epic UI. But that UI is very limited, does not include all of the columns available in the grid view, and is not customizable.

  • I'd like to see the backlog support viewing Portfolio Tree view along side stories and defects since not all are associated to a Portfolio Item but it provides a logic grouping to its items in a list.
